Cyber liability is a huge area of exposure for most startups.  Even if you’re not a “tech” startup per se, most tech companies today tend to leverage 3rd party tech products in ways that can leave them exposed.

Hence this 1-page startup cyber risk checklist. This is a good starting point for preventing risk, as it may not identify every single cyber risk startups face. The suggestions on this checklist cover everything from user contracts to IT operations to Content/IP procedures. They’ll help you ensure that your operations are tidy and secure. Without these policies and procedures in place, you can easily find yourself in hot water.

In reality, you can do everything you possibly can to prevent data breaches, but there will always be long tail events.  That’s where insurance steps in.  However, you won’t be able to get insurance for your company (or you’ll pay absurd premiums) if you’re not proactively doing things eliminate your exposure.  Things like those on this checklist.  If you make sure these policies are implemented, you’ll find it much easier to get great coverage while paying very affordable premiums.
